Review of the Educational Achievement of Muslim Pupils 23rd June 2012

 

You are cordially invited to play your part in fighting the curse of underachievement by the Pakistani origin pupils in High Wycombe by attending the seminar to review the Educational Achievement of Muslim Pupils, on Saturday, 23 June 2012, at Cressex School, at 9.45 AM for a 10 AM start.

 

In this day and age, with the shrinking economy, it has become even more important for all children (our future) to be properly equipped with educational tools so that they do not fall behind in securing training, further education and well paid jobs in the future. The Education Reflections seminar will be led by Tahir Alam, who is the Director of Muslim Parents Association (Birmingham), Is a Specialist in Muslim Education, a School Governance Consultant and Trainer.  He brings a wealth of experience and will be touching on the following subject areas:

 

Do parents know how their children are doing in school?
How good an education are state schools providing? 
What can parents do to transform their local school?   
What kind of Education do Muslim Parents want?
What does it mean to be an educated person? 
How can schools meet the religious needs of their Muslim pupils?
What can parents do to support their children in the home?
What is the best practice in addressing barriers to underachievement?

Unfortunately, we seem to be sleep walking and have not yet realised that our children are underachieving at school, in so far as only one in 5 of the Pakistani origin pupils in High Wycombe pass the 11+ (whereas it is one in 3 of the mainstream pupils) and there is still a 25% gap between the levels of achievement of the two groups at GCSE, in Bucks, where the yardstick is 5 passes at grades A* to C including Maths and English.

 

The MPA has been concerned for some time about underachievement and has been instrumental in getting the (Bucks) Education Authority to discuss the reasons for this state of affairs and whilst there are certain things the education authority, schools and teachers can do to improve this situation (such as having high expectations of all children and providing supplementary assistance to borderline pupils), the MPA believes that the parents and children and other members of the Pakistani origin community can also play their part in reducing this chasm.

 

To this end the MPA has joined hands with The Parents Forum for Children of African & Caribbean Heritage and have set up an umbrella organization called Bucks Minority Education Concern (BMEC), which organized a very successful conference in December 2011 and we hope to use our common resources and knowledge for the benefit of all our children.

 

The MPA has also been instrumental in organising literacy classes in the Totteridge area of Wycombe, but we desperately need people who can work in their own neighbourhoods and occasionally help out with organising events, attending training sessions, distributing MPA Newsletters, getting advertising for the Newsletter. In the meantime please make every effort to attend the above meeting, the agenda for which is on the reverse.
